“日本最後の秘境”と呼ばれる西表島。日本で唯一の星空保護区に認定されたこの島では、満天の星と天の川が夜空を彩ります。3月下旬には、固有種のヤエヤマヒメボタルが亜熱帯の森を舞い、空と森が無数の光で包まれます。本作は、数年かけて撮影した西表島の暗闇のなかに広がる幻想的な光の世界を記録したシリーズです。

Iriomote Island, often called “Japan’s last unexplored paradise,” is the country’s only designated Dark Sky Park. Here, the night sky is adorned with countless stars and a clearly visible Milky Way.In late March, the island’s endemic Yaeyama-hime fireflies begin to dance through the subtropical forest, illuminating both sky and jungle with countless points of light.

This series is the result of several years of photographing the enchanting world of light that emerges from the darkness of Iriomote’s nights.
