鹿児島の南およそ200kmに位置する屋久島。この小さな島は、日本全体の面積のわずか1000分の1しかありませんが、1500mを超える山が20座もそびえ、九州最高峰・宮之浦岳を有することから「洋上のアルプス」とも称されています。

南の島でありながら、冬には山岳部に雪が降り積もります。登山者がほとんど訪れない冬の屋久島では、手つかずの自然と静寂に包まれた山々を、まるで独り占めしているかのように感じられます。私は数年に渡って、寒波のタイミングを狙ってこの島を訪れ、雪化粧をした縄文杉と対峙してきました。常緑の森と白い雪が織りなすコントラストは、南国のイメージとはかけ離れた、幻想的な風景を生み出します。本作では、そうした屋久島の冬の一瞬を切り取りました。

Yakushima is located approximately 200 kilometers south of Kagoshima. Although this small island accounts for only about 1/1000th of Japan’s total land area, it is home to over twenty peaks rising above 1,500 meters, including Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak in Kyushu. For this reason, it is often referred to as the "Alps on the Ocean." Despite being a southern island, snow accumulates in the mountainous regions during winter. In this season, when few climbers visit, the untouched nature and profound silence of Yakushima’s mountains create a sense of having the entire landscape to oneself.

I have visited this island three times, carefully timing my trips to coincide with cold waves, in order to photograph the Jomon Sugi shrouded in snow. The contrast between the evergreen forest and the pure white snow creates a fantastical scene—one that defies the typical image of a subtropical island.
